Waka Quest — terms of use
Updated 20 October 2026
About these terms
Waka Quest is an app and website (waka-quest.com) for discovering the historic inner city of Paramaribo. These terms apply to everyone who uses Waka Quest, for free or with a pass. By using the app, you agree to them. Waka Quest is based at Soekwastraat 45, Paramaribo, Suriname; contact: info@waka-quest.com.
Walking at your own risk
Waka Quest is a walk through a busy city, on public roads. You walk at your own risk and you are responsible for your own safety and that of your children.
- Traffic: look up from your screen when walking and crossing, cross where it is safe and follow the traffic rules. The app shows the way, but does not watch the traffic.
- Heat and sun: carry water, protect yourself from the sun and take breaks in the shade. Take it easy if you do not feel well.
- Where you walk: stay on pavements and paths. Do not climb fences, enter closed or private property, or climb on or lean against monuments.
- Your belongings: keep an eye on your phone, bag and money, as in any city.
- Children play only under the supervision of an adult.
- If you do not feel safe at a place or time, do not go and skip the stop. Always follow the instructions of police, guards and owners.
- In an emergency: call 115.
The app sometimes sends you to a location for a task. You decide whether you can do so safely; you can skip any stop or answer the alternative question.
Rules of play
You follow the rules of play in the app (Protect the monuments): do not touch or climb, leave nothing behind and take nothing away, show respect at memorial sites, and ask permission before photographing people.
Information without guarantee
We do our best to keep everything correct and up to date, but give no guarantee. Monuments may be moved, closed, fenced off or under restoration; opening hours and entrance fees may change; GPS and routes are approximate. If something is not right, report it with "Something wrong?" in the app.
Partner businesses and offers
Some businesses along the way are partners of Waka Quest or have an offer in the app. What you buy there, you buy from that business; Waka Quest is not responsible for their products, services, prices or opening hours. Businesses pay to be a stop in the walk or to be on the night map. A paid extra place is marked with the label “Featured”. By day, Shopping & food shows the businesses with an offer today; with them you can put together Your day (up to 4 businesses, for today). There too, you buy from the business itself. Businesses that work with Waka Quest are also bound by the Partner Agreement and the modules they accept in the partner portal.
Passes and codes
- A pass gives access for a fixed time (for example 6, 24, 48 or 72 hours) to all monuments, the 2-hour tour and the certificate. The practice walk (including its certificate, with the Waka Quest QR code) and the ± 1-hour tour remain free.
- The time runs from activation, without interruption; a pass cannot be paused.
- A pass works on one phone; a second phone with the same code is refused. A family pass works on up to 5 phones.
- A code can be activated until the date on the pass. Codes are personal and may not be resold.
- A pass you received from a hotel, cruise line or other organisation cannot be exchanged for money.
- You can also buy a pass at a partner business, such as a hotel or café; you recognise these businesses in the app by Waki with a pass. You then pay the business, not Waka Quest, and receive a code or QR code. You activate the pass yourself in the app, up to 12 months after purchase (the date is on the pass); the time only starts when you activate it. Questions about payment or refunds go to the business where you bought the pass. If you lose a pass that has not been activated yet, the business can arrange a new code through Waka Quest.
Collector cards
Collector cards, neon signs, editions and the Waka Pioneer cards are a game feature. They have no monetary value, you cannot buy, sell or trade them, and we may change the design, the kinds and the rules for earning them. Editions and the Pioneer set can only be earned during a set period; not afterwards. The neon animals and fireflies you earn in the evening are also such a game element without monetary value. In case of abuse we can withdraw a Golden Ticket or a card, or reset the collection of an account.
Golden Tickets
A Golden Ticket is a gift from the partner business itself, as stated in the app. The business is responsible for the gift; Waka Quest only handles the ticket. You only get a Golden Ticket at the business itself, with your location on: your phone must have been within 150 metres of the business when you arrived (without location, for example on a practice walk without GPS, you get none). You need a (free) account: one ticket per person. By day a ticket opens after you did 4 monuments that day, in the evening after you caught a firefly at 3 businesses. You get at most one ticket by day and one in the evening per 3 days, at most one per business every 20 hours, and each business gives at most a set number of tickets per day; once they are gone, there are no more that day. A ticket works once, at that business, within the stated validity and the times the business sets for its ticket (for example evenings only), and only with internet. A ticket's QR code keeps changing; a screenshot or copy does not work. It has no monetary value, cannot be exchanged for money and is not replaced if it expires or gets lost. In case of misuse, such as tampering with tickets or the app, we may cancel tickets. A business that scans tickets itself keeps its PIN secret and is responsible for what happens with that PIN, also on the phones on which it was used (they remember a key of their own for 30 days).
Push notifications
Push notifications are voluntary. You turn them on and off under the bell. We only send them for real Waka Quest messages, such as news, a gift or a thank-you. This can also be an event of a partner business.
Competitions
A competition is organised by Waka Quest, by an organiser Waka Quest invites (for example for a company), or by a player in the app. You play with your team's code; share it only with your own team. You get one try per question, and the server decides whether an answer is right. Answers that stand out (too fast, far from the monument, checked in by hand or without GPS) may be reviewed; the administrator may then take points away or move a player to another team. The result the administrator or the organiser confirms is final. Choose a decent nickname; we may remove an offensive one. A competition is still a walk: don't run, mind the traffic and follow the rules of play. Any prizes are arranged by the organiser of the competition, not by Waka Quest. The organiser can pause the competition or one team, for example after an accident: no points count, and the end time moves on by the pause. “Hulp nodig” (help) sends a message to the organiser but is not an emergency service: in an accident or danger always call 115 or the emergency number in the app first. At a hidden treasure you can try once every 30 seconds.
If you start a competition yourself, you are the organiser: you share the team codes, review answers that stand out and confirm the result. Without a pass your first competition is free (2 teams of at most 5 players, a day at most); with a valid pass you start up to 3 a day, with up to 4 teams of 5. Every player uses their own free monuments (9 per phone) or their own pass. With a competition pass (small: 2 teams, large: 4 teams) all players of that one competition play without using their free monuments; a competition pass can be used once. For larger groups, Waka Quest organises a team outing. Take a team photo of your own team only, not of passers-by without their permission; in a competition among friends, the maker of the competition approves the team photos. In a competition among friends the app chooses the secrets itself (such as the word, the question and the place of the treasure); if the maker fills one in, the maker's own team gets no bonus for that task. After a competition every player gets a competition certificate; the walk certificate after a competition comes only with a pass, a competition pass or in a company competition. A Golden Ticket as a prize is a gift from the partner business, like the other Golden Tickets.
During the beta test, a valid team code gives access to the app for that one competition: from joining until a day after its end, for the result and your team card.
Waka Quest by night
Waka Quest by night is the evening and night mode of the app: you see businesses such as restaurants, bars, clubs, events, flower shops, saunas and swimming pools with their offers on the map. Waka Quest by night is free for players, also without a pass, and uses no free monuments; the businesses pay for their place. Offers, prices, opening hours and events come from the businesses themselves; what you buy there, you buy from that business (see Partner businesses and offers). Businesses and offers for 18+ (bars, clubs, casinos and offers with alcohol) only show after you confirm that you are 18 or older; that confirmation is your responsibility. With a family pass they are hidden. In the evening and at night you walk at your own risk (see Walking at your own risk): choose busy, well-lit streets and take a taxi for longer distances. Waka Quest by night is off during a competition. When you visit a business in the evening, you get a neon animal and a firefly for your collection (see Collector cards).
Guest-list tickets
For some events of a partner business you can put yourself on the guest list in the app, for free. You then get a ticket with a QR code, for yourself and possibly a few people who come with you (the event says how many). For this you need an account (Google; a guest account from Go out together does not count). You get one ticket per account per event, while places are left and until sign-up closes. You can cancel it until the start on any device with that account; your place then goes back to the list. A ticket is a place on the list, not a guarantee of entry and not proof of age: the business decides at the door (for example when it is full, because of a dress code or bad behaviour) and checks your ID for 18+. The ticket works once, only on the day of the event, and the business scans it with its PIN. You pay nothing in the app: entry, drinks and any costs at the door you pay to the business. What the ticket gives is decided and provided by the business itself. A ticket has no cash value and cannot be passed on for money. An event can be held somewhere else than the business's address; the ticket and the app then show that location. If an event moves to another time or place, your ticket moves with it; if you cannot make it then, cancel your place. If an event is called off, your ticket lapses. With notifications on you are told of both. In case of abuse, such as reselling tickets or tampering with tickets or the app, we can cancel tickets.
Go out together
With Go out together you share your evening, or by day Your day, with others: they walk along to the same businesses at the same time. You decide whom you invite; share the code or the link only with people you want to go out with. Waka Quest does not check who anyone is. Meet in public, busy places; the first stop is the meeting point. In the evening and at night you walk at your own risk (see Walking at your own risk and Waka Quest by night). An evening with an 18+ business is only for people aged 18 or over; that confirmation is everyone’s own responsibility, and with a family pass you cannot walk along. The maker can change or cancel the evening or day; the people walking along are told. Reminders are a help: we do not promise that they always arrive. You can plan an evening or day up to 7 days ahead, with at most 10 people walking along; an evening disappears at 06:00 the morning after, a day at midnight. If the maker takes the group on from Your day into the evening, the day becomes an evening with the same code, which disappears at 06:00 the morning after; the people walking along choose themselves whether to come along, and for 18+ businesses the same applies as above. If the maker closes the evening or day or deletes their account, someone who walks along can take over.
Reserving and booking
Through the app you can ask participating businesses for a table (at a restaurant), a treatment (at a spa or wellness centre) or a place on a tour, also for a group. A request is not yet a reservation: the business calls you and decides itself whether to confirm it, possibly with another time or another number of people. The business sets its own rules for cancelling, not showing up and upfront payments. Waka Quest handles no payments and is not a party to any payment between you and the business. Waka Quest only passes your request on and is not responsible for the reservation, the meal, the treatment, the tour or the business's service. Asking costs nothing. Whether, and from how many people, a business may ask an upfront payment, you see before you reserve; if a business asks none, you only pay at your visit. For a group above the business's maximum, call the business yourself. If the business does not answer within 48 hours, you are told and can call the business. Give honest details and cancel in time if you are not coming; if your group does not come, the business can note that. The business’s rules apply to cancelling, not showing up and refunds. If you cancel after an upfront payment, you settle the refund directly with the business; Waka Quest refunds nothing and does not decide on it.
Your account
You do not need an account to play. If you sign in with Google, you make sure that account is yours and stays well protected; do not leave your phone signed in with others. If you lose your phone, choose Account → Sign out on all devices. You can always delete your account (Account → Delete account): it is switched off at once and deleted for good after 30 days; until then you restore it by signing in again. The result of a competition stays valid when a player deletes their account: their points stay, without a name. Anyone who misuses Waka Quest may lose access to their account.
Fair use
Do not use Waka Quest to harass or mislead others: no false reports, no offensive names or texts in groups and feedback, and no attempts to get around codes, security or the app. We may remove or block groups, texts or codes if this happens.
Ownership
The texts, tasks, figures, design, logo and the name Waka Quest are the property of Waka Quest. Photos by others are used with credit under their own licence. You may use Waka Quest for yourself, not to copy or resell content. Photos you take yourself remain yours and stay on your phone, except a team photo you send in during a competition (see Competitions).
Liability
Waka Quest is provided as is. To the extent permitted by law, Waka Quest is not liable for injury, damage, loss, theft, fines, or missed appointments or transport during or because of the use of the app, except in case of intent or gross negligence by Waka Quest. If Waka Quest is liable after all, this is limited to the amount you paid for your pass.
Privacy
How we handle data is described in our privacy statement.
Changes and law
We may change these terms; the date at the top shows when this last happened. These terms are governed by the laws of Suriname. If the languages differ, the Dutch text prevails. Questions? Email info@waka-quest.com.
